Best Petrol Lawn Mowers UK - Buying Guide and Top 10 Rated Mowers

In this article we will take a much closer look, at the best petrol lawn mowers currently available in the UK market. The good news is that you do not have to check for a great deal of complex features.

More often than not, many people will simply be driven by their budget or by their favourite brand. There are a few things though that we believe are important before you make your final buying decision. So irrespective of which brand you like, or how much you are willing to spend, below you will find a list of other important considerations to take into account.

These are:

  • The power of the motor - important for heavier use or more regular use
  • The width of the cut - very important especially if you have a larger garden, the wider the cut the quicker you will be able to get the garden finished
  • The capacity of the collecting grass box - if you want to cut down on the number of trips from the cutting area to the bin or compost heap
  • How easy they are to start - many of these can be a nightmare to get started
  • How easy they are too look after and maintain - most petrol mowers do need regular maintenance so worth checking out what you will need to do.

Most of the above features are self-explanatory, so I will not bore you with all of the details. Suffice to say, that generally speaking the bigger the motor, and the bigger the cutting width, then the faster you will be able to cut your grass.

Below you will find a more detailed buying guide for petrol driven mowers, but to help you make a quicker decision, we have completed a Top 10 list of petrol lawnmowers below. This list is built entirely from ratings assigned to each model by actual real life buyers.

We reviewed all of the petrol models at the various online websites and then summarised these into a table. They are then placed in order by the highest rating first. (scored out of 100%)

We have also included the average price (RRP) but please note that can fluctuate a lot and should only be used as a guide.

Underneath the table, we have done a more detailed review on each one. Underneath those reviews, you will find a full and more detailed buying guide.

This one gets solid 4 & 5 star reviews from online buyers. I looked hard at many online websites and only a small number of buyers have given this one a bad review. That of course is always a very good thing.

Buyers clearly stated that this one started easily (hot or cold), cut really well and the grass collection system was very good.

No 3 Choice - Hyundai 196cc Electric Start Self Propelled 4-in-1 Rotary Petrol Lawn Mower Review

  • Overall buyers have given this mower good reviews but there are some niggly annoying things such as connecting the battery, and the fact that the side discharge chute comes off too easy.
  • Buyers said that it started well and started every single time.
  • Buyers said it worked great on longer, thicker and even on damp grass
  • It is a great work horse but the mower is heavy.

This is a very powerful mower, but it is heavy and many buyers struggled to keep this one under control. You do need to be strong and able to handle this one, especially if you are cutting long grass or thicker grass.

It does self drive and you can use the gears to go through the speeds, but you do need to stay in control of this one.

No 4 Choice - McCulloch M46-110R Classic Review

Average Online Price = £279.99

Recommended for small to medium lawns.

  • It does come fully assembled which means you can use it instantly
  • Buyers said it was good value for the price paid
  • A few buyers said the 50 litre grass container is a bit too small and means more trips backwards and forwards to the recycling bin

This mower is very well made and McCullough is a popular choice for some UK buyers. This model is cheaper than many on the list and overall according to buyers does a good job. A few people did say the grass box was too small. Otherwise they stated that it started easy, and in terms of doing the actual cutting, this mower did a very good job.

No 5 Choice - WEBB R41SP 40 cm Self Propelled Petrol Lawnmower Review

  • They also said it was very well made and easy to start
  • Buyers said it was also very easy to assemble
  • A few buyers said this one could be hard to start and especially if you are new to petrol mowers

The Webb company have been making petrol mowers for a very long time. This model is at the lower end of the price point so good enough in terms of value for money. It will work for smaller to medium sized gardens. A few buyers did say they had trouble starting this one.

Overall though with a 74% buyer satisfaction rating, most buyers thought their purchase was a good one.

No 6 Choice - Hyundai 159cc 4-in-1 Petrol Lawnmower Review

74%
Buyer Satisfaction

Average Online Price = £345

Recommended for medium to larger lawns or overgrown lawns

  • Engine
  • Cutting
  • Reviews
  • Specification
  • This is a big and powerful mower and good for larger gardens
  • Buyers said be aware that this is a heavy mower so not ideal for gardens with a steep slope of for terrace style gardens
  • It is easy to operate and does a very good job at cutting all types of lawns
  • The grass collection box is a great size and means fewer trips to the bin
  • A few buyers said this was difficult to start or simply to heavy to move around easily

The price on this Hyundai model will put many people off. That combined with a lower rating than many on my list makes this one a choice for Hyundai fans only I believe. It is a well made mower and cuts well, but it is very heavy and that can make it hard to move around, especially in small, tight or confined spaces.

No 7 Choice - WEBB R46SP 46 cm Self Propelled Petrol Lawnmower Review

  • Buyers said it was easy to set up and easy enough to handle
  • Buyers also said that it cuts very well and the self propelled motion makes that a great deal easier
  • A couple of buyers complained about the assembly instructions and a few buyers said this was not that good on longer grass

This is the second Webb motor on my top 10 list of petrol mowers, so clearly these sell well enough. A few buyers did have a grumble that this model did not perform well on longer type grasses.

Overall though buyers found it easy enough to assemble, easy to start and easy to use.

No 8 Choice - Einhell GC-PM 46 S Self Propelled Petrol Lawnmower Review

  • Buyers also said this model was very quiet, changing cutting heights was very easy
  • The main complaint about this model was the rear wheel drive packed in after a few months and they had to get the mower replaced under warranty
  • The mower is heavy and that makes it hard to negotiate tight spaces

There are a few of these German Einhell branded petrol mowers available but this one refers to the GC-PM 46 S model. It gets good ratings from buyers though a few found it just too heavy to easily move around.

No 9 Choice - Einhell GC-PM 46/3 S Self Propelled Petrol Lawnmower Review

  • Specification
  • 18" (46 cm) cutting width

  • Stainless steel chamber

At the current price point, this is certainly great value for money. All the buyers said that it was easy to start, lightweight and easy to manoeuvre. The engine size is good enough without being over powerful. This model is popular mainly for the price.

This mower is quiet compared to many others on the market.  With such a high rating buyers clearly like this one a lot and that makes it good enough to put right at the top of my top 10 list.

Buyers clearly stated that this one started easily (hot or cold), cut really well and the grass collection system was very good.

Top Tips on Buying a Petrol Mower

Below I will offer you some important tips for buying a petrol lawnmower. You should find these really helpful especially if you are a first time buyer.

People make the switch to a petrol mower for a few different reasons. Mainly they change as they don't like using mowers with leads that need plugged into the electricity mains. More often than not that also means having to use an extension lead, as the electric lead on the mower is seldom long enough.

For some petrol buyers they also like the freedom of not having a lead and that way they can use it anywhere without having to worry about a power source.

Some others buy petrol mowers as they are more powerful and they also will cut the lawn a great deal quicker. They are also much better for cutting thicker, longer and even wet grass. So as you can see, there are plenty of good reasons to make the switch.

Finally it is worth mentioning that some men are just "petrol heads" and like engines.

Explaining Self Propelled for Lawnmowers

Many mowers have what is called a rear wheel drive and this engages when the motor starts. That engagement then helps push the mower forwards and does most of the work, so as you don't have to push it. This is really useful especially on slopes.

Not all petrol mowers have this so just be aware of that. The better petrol mowers also allow for the rear wheel drive to be temporarily disconnected. That is useful if you want to work in a confined space or have the full control of the mower.

Explaining Engine Size in Petrol Mowers

Most petrol mowers use a 4 stroke single cylinder engine. These engines are usually measured in something like 139cc. In essence this is how the size of the engine is measured. Smaller garden appliances like a hedge trimmer will have a 2-stroke engine, but larger mowers use a 4 stroke engine.

The general rule of thumb is the bigger the engine the more power it will have.

Explaining Grass Collection Boxes on Petrol Mowers

This is the container that catches the grass from the rear of the mower during the cutting process. The smaller petrol mowers will have 50 litre boxes and the larger ones will have 70 litre boxes. The bigger the box the less times you will have to empty it.

Some of these boxes will have a level indicator that you can view without having to remove the container from the mower.

Explaining Grass Cutting Heights for Petrol Mowers

Experienced gardeners will know that grass should be cut at different heights depending on the seasons. Some people prefer shorter grass whereas others like a more lush feel to their lawns. That is why it is important to length of cut options.

Almost every good quality petrol mower will have these. That means you can decide how tall your grass should be by selecting the height, which is usually done by adjusting a handle.
