Bosch AHS 50-20 Li Cordless Hedge Trimmer Review UK

By  Enda

Thanks for taking your time to read our review on the popular Bosch AHS 50-20 Li cordless hedge cutter with the model number of 0600849F02.

This model is suitable for normal hedges, tall hedges and wide hedges. Please note that this hedge cutter is sold as a tool only option. You either have to already own a Bosch 18V compatible battery and charger, or be prepared to purchase those.

It does of course make the initial purchase an expensive one, but that would be the same if you buy any cordless tool brand for the first time. You do need to get a battery and charger for cordless tools to work.

This AHS50-20 model has a 50 cm blade length with 20 mm spacing, and also has an extendable pole with a pivoting head that provides a reach of up to 2.6 m. Hopefully that would mean no longer having to use ladders.

Value for Money

This is sold as a tool only and compares well with other good quality gardening brands. At around £160 it does seem a little expensive, but the fact that it is very well made, and has a pol extension that works really well, does justify the higher price.

It also comes with a 2 year guarantee, which can be extended to 3 years when you become a Bosch member online. They also have a very good UK customer service team, and replacement parts are readily available.

Battery Life

As we have mentioned this model is sold as a tool only option, which is fine if you already own an 18V battery that you use with other tools such as a strimmer, a drill or some type of power saw.

If you don't own those, then you can also but this with a battery and charger, though that will be more expensive.

Ease of Use

This hedge cutter is extremely light and provides cordless mobility with maximum power. The 500 mm blade length, 20 mm tooth opening and the electronic “Anti-Blocking System” ensures you’ve got the right garden tool to get the job done

We found that this hedge trimmer will easily cut until you get up to branches around 2cm in diameter. After that you will need to use a saw or lopper. This particular model does however also have an extending pole, and that can get you up to a height of 2.6 metres. (8.5 feet)

For many home owners, that may mean the difference between using and not using a ladder.

Important Basic Features

Most people just want a trimmer that will take care of their hedges. The beauty of a cordless hedge trimmer is that you can use it anywhere, and you never have to worry about accidentally cutting through another electric lead again. (If you have ever done that, you know what we mean!)

The Blade

The blade length on this is 50cm (just under 20") so quite a good width and big enough for most hedges. The blade is sharp and coated to stop it from sticking, and the blades are very easy to replace should you ever need to. These are Swiss-precision blades- laser-cut and diamond-ground for clean cuts.

The Cutting Stroke Speed

At 1,500 strokes per minute, this is fast and will quickly trim hedges. This trimmer cuts on both sides which you will find extremely handy.

The Battery Life

We have already explained this above, but Bosch hedge trimmers have one of the longest battery life of any of the branded hedge trimmers.

What Features Make this a Better Choice?

There are lots of these cordless hedge trimmers on the UK market. So what makes this one different from the rest?

Great Build and Construction

When you think of top quality tools then Bosch will definitely be one of the makers that comes to mind. This hedge trimmer is superb quality in every way and all at a bargain price. The casing is strong, sturdy and built to last. The stain free shear blade is nickel plating with a high anti-abrasion surface for long lasting coating.

Compatible with other Bosch Power Tools

If you have a range of Bosch tools then you will know all about their batteries. This battery fits 100+ other Bosch  machines , from hedge trimmers and chainsaws to combi drills and jig saws, in fact any other 18V tool that they make.

Our Verdict on the Bosch Hedge Trimmer

This AHS50-20 model is one of their biggest sellers online and has maintained high ratings and reviews since it was released.

It works quickly and effectively, and buyers like the ability to be able to cut both wider and higher hedges with ease. It means you don't need to stretch across wider hedges, and you don't need to try and balance on a ladder.

The battery charge time is good and the run time of 80 minutes on a 2.5 Ah battery is also good. You can of course extend that run time by getting a larger 4.0 or 5.0 Ah battery, but they are more expensive.

We recommend this hedge trimmer as overall we think it is good value for money and the buyer ratings are excellent.

The Bosch Brand (Gardening)

Bosch are of course a very well known tool brand. Aside from their high quality tools, they also make a wide range of gardening tools. These range from lawnmowers, lawn rakers, verticutters, trimmers, hedge cutters, chainsaws, leaf blowers shredders and multi-tool systems.

They are a German brand and their garden products are very popular with many UK gardeners. They have 40 locations spread across the UK with over 5,000 employees. In the UK they generate annual revenues of around £3.5 Billion, with the UK being their second largest market.

Enda

I am someone who enjoys a little gardening. Now I am not someone who spend hours in the garden, but I do like both my front and back gardens to look really nice. Well kept lawns, neatly trimmed hedges, and borders filled with plants, make a huge difference, to how your property looks.
